The indonesian stratovolcano Tambora had erupted in April 1815 and it led directly to the "Year without a summer" of 1816. Furthermore, the colossal amounts of dust and sulphur dioxide released into the atmosphere led to the monsoon like rains that dogged the weary soldiers tramping through it on their way to the field of Waterloo - aptly named in hindsight!
